Maintenance intervals for Tesla Model 3, S, X and Y

Common maintenance items

Tesla does not require traditional annual general servicing or regular engine-oil changes.

• Tyre rotation: every 10,000 km or when the tread-depth difference reaches 1.5 mm, whichever comes first.
• Brake calipers: clean and lubricate every 12 months or 20,000 km when driving on salted winter roads. See the exception for newer Model Y vehicles below.
• Wiper blades: replace annually, or sooner if they leave streaks.
• Brake fluid: check condition and contamination every four years. Replace as needed. Heavy brake use may require more frequent checks and replacement.
• HEPA and carbon filters: replace every three years if the vehicle has HEPA filtration.

Model 3

Replace the cabin filter every two years. The A/C desiccant interval depends on model year and whether the car has a heat pump.

• 2017–2023 without a heat pump: replace the desiccant every six years.
• Vehicles with a heat pump and Model 3 from 2024: check the vehicle-specific instructions in the Service menu.

Model S

Maintenance intervals differ by model year.

• 2012–2020: replace the cabin filter and A/C desiccant every two years.
• From 2021: check the cabin-filter interval in your vehicle’s maintenance summary and model-specific owner’s manual; Tesla’s public sources give different intervals. Also check the A/C desiccant replacement requirements.

Model X

Maintenance intervals differ by model year.

• 2015–2020: replace the cabin filter every two years and the A/C desiccant every four years.
• From 2021: check the cabin-filter interval in your vehicle’s maintenance summary and model-specific owner’s manual; Tesla’s public sources give different intervals. Also check the A/C desiccant replacement requirements.

Model Y

Replace the cabin filter every two years. There is no general scheduled replacement interval for the A/C desiccant; check your vehicle’s instructions.

• Built up to and including February 2025: clean and lubricate brake calipers every 12 months or 20,000 km when driving on salted winter roads.
• Built after February 2025: clean the calipers at the same interval. Tesla’s guidance does not require lubrication.

Maintenance based on condition

Not every maintenance item has a fixed time or mileage interval.

• Brake pads and discs are inspected and replaced according to wear.
• Low-voltage battery and A/C refrigerant work depends on condition, diagnostics and vehicle alerts.
• In most cases, the battery coolant does not need replacement during the vehicle’s lifetime.
• Tyre replacement is recommended by six years, or sooner depending on condition.
• Check the vehicle’s maintenance summary for radiator and windscreen camera-area cleaning needs.
• The permitted rotation pattern depends on tyre size and direction. Different-sized front and rear tyres must not be swapped between axles.

Regular owner checks

Also follow the checks in your vehicle’s own manual.

• Check tyre pressures at least monthly with the tyres cold.
• Check tyres, lights, wipers, washers and brakes. Watch for alerts and fluid leaks.
• Have the wheel alignment checked if the car pulls to one side or the tyres wear unevenly.
• Install vehicle software updates as soon as possible.

Different intervals stated for Model S and Model X from 2021

Tesla’s model-specific owner’s manuals specify two years for the cabin filter, while the general maintenance page specifies three. Check the recommendation for your vehicle in its maintenance summary and owner’s manual.

Tesla updates its recommendations. Check Controls > Service in your vehicle and the owner’s manual for the correct model and model year. Driving conditions can also affect maintenance needs.
